About the Event
The legend that is Trisha Sewell is coming to our little city to deliver a BRAND NEW set of solo jazz workshops to take students on an expedition of progression, evolution, and context. The classes will enable you to delve deeply into the interconnections between various dances from the African diaspora and how they complement one another. You will work on movement and understanding rhythm, exploring how at the core of experience one finds self-expression and individuality.
The solo workshop is 2 day long but we will also sell day tickets.Â
A limited number of Access to Dance coupons are available offering a 50% discount for those struggling finanicially for any reason. Use the coupon code R2RACCESSTODANCE at the checkout.

Motherland Rhythms – This will be an explosion of total-body movement. African dance allows you to be free in your movement and connect yourself closely with rhythms. We will focus on the traditions of the West African region. These movements are reflective of self-expression and improvisation which is a celebration of life and its experiences. Come prepared to be introduced to the concepts of polyrhythms, isolations, call-and-response, individualism, and dance with an inner performative function. You will leave understanding the ‘seeds’ from which the many dance forms of the swing dance umbrella, including Lindy Hop, Shag and Balboa have grown. Â
Ebb n Flow – Lindy Hop incorporates creatively both partnered and solo movements. However, to do so, it must feel good and comfortable in your body. If mixing the partnered and solo movements challenges you, then this class is for you! Learn patterns from the repertoire of essential jazz steps for every Lindy Hopper. The emphasis of learning is on the style, technique, and rhythm of each move, as well as how to transition for ‘ebb and flow’. Â
Sunday
British Gospel – A sound that conveys the celebration of life, self-expression, aspiration, hopes and ambitions. Here we may express our emotions through movement. Traditional spiritual dancing is about transcending the mind and body to establish a relationship with the ancestors. Â
Lovers Rock - the sound of a Black British Blues experience. Come celebrate an expressive art form created by a vibrant and energetic Jamaican immigrant culture when disengaged from its hostile environment. You will be introduced to the sensual sounds of romantic ballads. Here you will explore how to move your body to a soundtrack of hopes and dreams. Be prepared to feel liberated, connect with a spiritual nakedness and permit yourself to break free from any inhibitions!
