Private Lessons

Some of our Cambridge Swing Dance teachers also offer private classes, which can be valuable for a number of reasons: from your very first lesson in a more private setting to exploring the way your body moves with more personalised feedback. This page explains what a private class is, how it can support your dancing, and what to do if you are interested in taking one.
What is a private class?
-
A one-off or series of classes either one to one, or two learners with one teacher. Typically they may last 1-2 hrs depending on your needs and availability
Who might be interested in a private class?
-
Anyone!
-
Perhaps you’re not available on the nights when group classes run, or you want to develop your skills outside of regular classes. Maybe you feel like you’ve hit a plateau in your dancing and would like some constructive guidance to develop, or there’s a particular skill you want to develop.
-
Private lessons may also be helpful if you’re looking to learn to dance for a particular occasion (e.g. Wedding). We have previously worked with couples ahead of their wedding day to build confidence and steps that can be used in a first dance or on any dancefloor, so please don't hesitate to reach out if you want to learn a partner dance ahead of your big day.
How can private classes support your dancing?
-
There are many benefits to learning dance in group classes: you lead and/or follow different people with different styles, and learn from multiple teachers who each explain things in their own way.
-
Private classes offer something different: they provide the chance to dive deeper into specific topics, get personalised feedback and work on targeted exercises to improve. They’re tailored to your pace of learning and your individual goals.
Here a few things to consider if you are thinking of taking a private class:
-
What do you want to get out of it? Think about the change or result you’re hoping for.
-
How will you know it’s working? Define what progress or success would look like for you. This can also be discussed with the teacher if you don’t have any fixed ideas.
-
Who inspires you? Consider which CSD teachers resonate with you - both in their teaching style and how they explain things. They might be the best ones to approach.
-
Shared session? You can think about taking private classes with another student to split the costs.
Costs:
-
We (CSD) are happy to put you in touch with the people who teach for us, but for a private lesson the teachers set the prices.
-
Local teachers typically charge between £15-30/hr, and their rates may be flexible - when you reach out, let them know how much you are considering spending on the classes.
-
Venue costs - if you or the teacher are able to host the class in your own home then there may not be venue costs, but if you need to hire venues this will be a cost to consider.
